User Experience Design (UX design) is a process of designing a product, to meet the need of the users while keeping in mind the users’ feedback. The products designed in this way will reduce the cost of development of the product, and also result in the higher usability of the product. A UX designer must have certain skills to be able to design products in such way.
The process of designing involves a series of steps like – coding, designing, managing products, understanding of the product and marketing. Apart from having knowledge in all these fields, a UX designer needs to research constantly to be updated about current technology.
1. User Interface (UI) is part of User Experience
Many people get confused between UX and UI design. However, every UX designer must know the rule that UI is just a part of UX. They must know the difference between the two. UX design refers to the entire process of designing and the overall feel of the product to the user while UI refers to the presentation and interactivity of the product. UI design follows the path laid by UX design.
2. Understand the audience
One of the golden rules that every UX designer must know is that they are designing the product for certain audience. The designers must keep their audiences’ preferences and need in mind while designing a product for them. This means that benefits should be given more importance that features. Every UX designer must carry out a thorough research about the audiences’ preference as this knowledge will come handy in designing a suitable product for them.
In order to understand the audience, the UX designers must know that the users are different from the designers. They can’t presume that the users will react the same way they are reacting to a product. There is a technique named as usability testing that will provide them with the knowledge about the requirement of the users, provided the tests are being carried out on real users. The testing might involve too much time, but it is the only way to understand the audience for whom the UX designers are creating the product.
3. Prototyping is an essential step before creating the real product
Every UX designer must know that there is a difference between theory and practice. Once a design is finalized, the designer must create a prototype first to ensure that their hypothesis about the design of a product is correct. When a designer skipped the step of building a prototype, it might happen that after building the real product, it didn’t match with the expectation or the need of the user. This will result in the loss of time and revenue. To avoid such circumstances, the prototype must be created first to carry out the tests and to understand that the designers are following the correct direction.
4. Shorter span for providing information
A recent study has shown that users have very less patience as they wait for information about a particular product. This fact is very important for the UX designers to know, while they aim to provide product information to the users. The designers must provide only relevant and valuable information on the interface. There is a technique named as functional minimalism that helps the UX designers to remove unnecessary information from the interface without compromising on the experience to the user.
5. Use real content when designing
An important rule that every designer must know is the importance of content in a product from SEO point of view. While many designers prefer to use a placeholder text or image to create a better presentation of the product, using real content with actual data will change the entire way of presentation of the product. It is in the best interest of the user that real content in matters of texts, images and videos should be provided while designing a product. In this way, a designer can get as much close to the real user experience as possible.
6. Keep things simple and consistent
Every UX designer must know the value of simplicity in matters of digital products. The designers must provide their users with a user-friendly and easy to understand app. The more complex set of instructions will confuse the users and they might find it difficult to understand the functioning of an app and the whole point of UX designing a product will be lost.
The main purpose of a UX designer is to design a product for a user that will not only meet all their requirements but also provide them with a great deal of customer satisfaction. In order to achieve this goal, every designer must have few basic skills along with the knowledge of few golden rules. The above-mentioned rules will help every designer to achieve their goals.
